Innovations in Steam Sterilization: Leveraging Evidence and Technologies for Safe Load Release
Saturated steam sterilization cycle controls and monitoring indicators are continually challenged to determine whether current state delivers safe and effective sterilization cycles results. As technology evolved, cycle control variables with cycle phases were implemented, and cycle performance printouts became available for each cycle. This allowed for safer cycle performance interpretation and provided an additional tool for end users to determine whether a cycle was within the specifications. To determine how lethal a saturated steam sterilization cycle was, microorganism spores were used, and their use continues today. An increased demand for fast and accurate sterilization cycle release adds to the rigorous process of adopting new controls and quality indicator monitors.

    About the Speaker

    Paulo Laranjeira, Ph.D.

Dr. Paulo Laranjeira has 25 years of experience as a process development and qualification professional for sterilization, using saturated steam, hydrogen peroxide and ethylene oxide in the pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare areas. He conducted many investigations with biological and chemical indicators, and with different sterile barrier systems, with the findings published in journals. He has authored book chapters, technical documents and white papers on topics related to sterilization and decontamination processes. Dr. Laranjeira is currently a full-time contractor with the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and invited professor at post-graduate schools on equipment qualification and monitoring for the pharmaceutical and healthcare market. He has also shared his knowledge by lecturing in Congresses and Symposia.
